Although it has been thought that within the USA there's not such a big problem with counterfeit bills as in many other countries, the amount of counterfeit currency in circulation in the USA is on the rise. Recently, an alarming number of cases involving counterfeit money has been reported. In a small town of Kokoma, Indiana, there have been 9 cases of fake $50 bills reported.
Although there are different levels of technological sophistication in producing fake bills, more often than not it is possible to identify them. Here are a few techniques you can use:
1) Hold the bill to a light source and make sure it has a vertical running security thread. Based on the denomination, it will have "USA TEN, USA TWENTY" etc. printed on it
2) There should be a watermark embedded and visible on either side of the bill when you hold it to a source of light. The watermark shows the image of the same president printed on the bill.
3) The texture of the bill in question must be the same as of the bill known to be genuine (most counterfeit banknotes are much smoother to touch than real ones.
4) Put a bill under a source of UV light. If the bill is real, it should glow blue for the 5, orange for the 10, green for the 20, yellow for the 50, and red for the 100 dollar bill.
5) Many businesses use a counterfeit detection pen that makes a golden mark, which turn black on a counterfeit bill
Note that bills issued prior to 1990 have neither watermark nor security thread.
