Exchanging Currency - Check Your Bills!

There are a lot of considerations when exchanging currency internationally. Whether or not to exchange cash or rely on credit cards? Should you withdraw money from an ATM abroad or ask for a bank withdrawal? Today, I would like to focus on exchanging cash currency abroad, and there is one incredibly important, yet easy-to-forget step in exchanging your currency: inspecting the bills!
It is incredibly easy to overlook a slightly damaged banknote, namely because, unless they are mutilated beyond recognition, damaged banknotes are generally still legal tender in their home countries.
The situation changes drastically overseas. In many countries, bureaus de change and even banks themselves will not accept banknotes or bills that have any kind of damage at all. Rips, tears, stains and sometimes even wrinkles (though less so) can be cause for rejection of the bill or refusal to change it.
Case in point: in preparation for my most recent trip abroad, I withdrew a rather large sum of cash from my bank account, as I prefer to carry cash and exchange it abroad than incur the fees associated with using my credit/debit cards internationally. In a frenzy of packing fervor, I failed to look at each bill carefully.
Now, I am stuck with one gimp $50 bill that has a small tear off one of its corners! While no one would bat an eye at this bill in the US, abroad it is a totally different story. I even tried to use the bill as payment for a service in the US Embassy and they refused it, as well!
The moral of the story: when withdrawing cash to be exchanged abroad, always, always inspect each bill carefully before you leave the country. If there are any questionable bills with stains, tears or bad wrinkles, ask your bank at home to exchange them for crisper or newer bills (which they should do, no questions asked)!

Identifying Phony Money Takes Common Sense and a Handy Gadget
The crime of currency counterfeiting is once again on the rise and poses a potential serious threat not only to the nation's economy but world economy as well. For anybody who handles money in any way shape or form - and who doesn't? -- becoming more familiar with currency, especially the new U.S. paper currency, can save a lot of financial loss and heartache. And there are some handy, inexpensive items on the market to help determine both fake and genuine bills.
The famous United States Secret Service is the entity charged with pursuing cases involving the counterfeiting of U.S. "obligations and securities", which include U.S. currency (paper money and coins), U.S. Treasury checks, Department of Agriculture food coupons and U.S. postage stamps. The Secret Service works with state, local and sometimes even foreign law enforcement agencies to pursue phony moneymakers and has set up a very informative website with sections called How to Detect Counterfeit Money and Know Your Money to offer advice on how to guard against forgery losses. In the meantime, here are some pointers for spotting fakes in the newer paper currency:
U.S. bills always feature a picture of someone, typically a long dead president, although not always. (Think of Benjamin Franklin on the $100 bill.) When held up to the light, most real money displays a "ghost" image of the president or politician featured on the bill. All U.S. paper money has a unique serial number. These serial numbers should be evenly spaced and printed in the same ink color as the Treasury Seal. And real money also features the signature of someone from the treasury department. A big red flag to detecting a counterfeit note is if it's missing the distinctive red and blue threads which the US Treasury puts in the paper. If you suspect a bill is counterfeit, compare it with a real bill for specific evidence of counterfeiting.
A terrific and easy to use gadget is the counterfeit banknote detection marker, which is available to the public for about five dollars. These markers or pens contain an iodine-based ink and can be used to detect counterfeit Swiss, Euro and U.S banknotes, among others. Genuine banknotes are usually printed on paper based on cotton fibers and don't contain the starches that react with iodine. As we've all seen at the bank or grocery store, when the pen is used to mark genuine bills, the mark is yellowish or clear.
To find out about other anti-counterfeiting features, cool new U.S. currency designs, and just plain fun money facts, visit the website of the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Or see the web page of the Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network for more information on fighting other financial crimes, including terrorism financing and money laundering. Tips For Collecting Old Money

One of the most common hobbies is collecting money. Many people have enjoyed this activity for decades and money collecting is thriving even today. As a hobby, collecting money means collecting old money. Otherwise, we are all trying to collect money before the bills come. However, do you know how many people collect old money, antique notes and coins from previous decades and even centuries?
Coin collectors are much more common than old money collectors of the paper variety, though the latter are still quite active and manage to find some rare items occasionally. That paper variety may include pre US colonial currency, money from the beginning of the 19th century, currency from the Confederate States of America and also some souvenir cards of old money as the money itself are almost impossible to find and twice as hard to purchase.
If you are keen on collecting old money you will probably know that a collector's item of old money is called fractional currency. I was really intrigued when I learnt that during the Civil War the United States began printing 50 cents, 25 cents, 15 cents, 10 cents and 5 cents paper money as they run short on change. Now such weird banknotes are highly desired by any true collector.
There is also other interesting fractional currency which is much sought after. These are private banknotes from the 1800s. Before the US government created a national banknote there were some banks issuing their own money without government backing. However, it was not long before these banks were closed down and the banknotes were counterfeited and altered.
Once the national bank system was established, privately issued bank money was declared to be illegal. Ever since US government money was issued it has retained monetary value. However, it is not the same case with the obsolete old bills from closed banks and this is the prime reason why these banknotes are worth finding. Actually private banknotes from the 1800s have remained an interesting item for collectors throughout the centuries.
It is pretty evident that a lot of old money has significant value nowadays. It is true that casual collectors cannot afford to have any authentic old money and notes from the 1800s and early 1900s as their value and consequently price are too high. That's how collecting souvenir cards are becoming more and more popular. Having them you can collect a piece of history without actually paying a high price for it.
If you are wondering where you can find old money, you probably won't like my answer. It is really difficult to find old money. Of course, you might still be able to collect a Thomas Jefferson two dollar bill, but those antique coins and notes you are seeking won't be easily found, nor purchased. The easiest way to satisfy your desire to collect old money is through dealers, collectors, auctions and old money paper shows.
You might also find the International Bank Note Society's Journal and webpage not only very interesting but useful, as well. They offer contact information for trades and auctions and what is the best, they provide you with images of old currency on their website. In conclusion, old money collecting is a unique and fun hobby. It has its challenges but it there is no doubt it is worth taking.

On behalf of paradigm, if a good-looking coin has a strict graze on the back with the purpose of is unnoticeable it spirit not count anti the coin, but the stem can not come to pass the same if the graze is located on the front before central meaning.
3. Strike. It refers to the coin deceitful process in which the coin is being stamped on top of a planchet. Taking part in overall grading, cross your mind does not weigh a impressive deal.
4. Coloration. On behalf of roughly coin collectors, upholding of primary color of the coin has a giant crash on its assessment especially if it is a copper before silver coin.

It only takes one second to have a quick look at your banknotes - if you are keen to know more just search Radar Banknotes, Repeater Banknotes, Solids etc on any engine.

Have a search for "One dollar 2000 mule" or "Rare decimal coins" or "20c Wavy 1966" - you'll find they are easy to recognise and well worth looking out for.

How to Do Magic Tricks For Fun - Breaking a Pencil With a Banknote!

This is another great trick to show your family, friends, and business associates. In this trick, you break a pencil in half with nothing more than a banknote.
How The Trick Appears To The Audience
The Magician borrows banknote, such as five pound note or a dollar bill, and folds it in half lengthwise. He then gets a member of the audience to hold a pencil, one end in either hand, in front of him. With a sweeping action, the Magician strikes the pencil with the banknote and breaks the pencil in two! No matter how hard the other people try, they cannot replicate the trick.
How The Trick Is Done
Give a long pencil to a member of the audience and get them to hold it horizontally, one hand at either end, about waist height, in front of them. Impress upon them that they should hold the pencil tightly. Borrow a banknote from another member of the audience and fold it half lengthwise. Make a show of running your finger down the fold and saying how sharp it is. Then hold the banknote at one end between your thumb and first finger, with the fold at the bottom.
Raise the banknote above the pencil and then quickly bring it down on the pencil in a sweeping, chopping action. Just before the banknote hits the pencil, and under the cover of the banknote, quickly extend your first finger. Your finger and banknote will hit the pencil at the same time and break the pencil in half. As you hand continues its downward motion, quickly retract your finger. If your do it at the right speed, no one will see you moving your finger.
Your audience will be amazed and want to try it themselves. However, without the secret, they will never be able to do it.

Dealing With Fake Banknotes

Although it has been thought that within the USA there's not such a big problem with counterfeit bills as in many other countries, the amount of counterfeit currency in circulation in the USA is on the rise. Recently, an alarming number of cases involving counterfeit money has been reported. In a small town of Kokoma, Indiana, there have been 9 cases of fake $50 bills reported.
Although there are different levels of technological sophistication in producing fake bills, more often than not it is possible to identify them. Here are a few techniques you can use:
1) Hold the bill to a light source and make sure it has a vertical running security thread. Based on the denomination, it will have "USA TEN, USA TWENTY" etc. printed on it
2) There should be a watermark embedded and visible on either side of the bill when you hold it to a source of light. The watermark shows the image of the same president printed on the bill.
3) The texture of the bill in question must be the same as of the bill known to be genuine (most counterfeit banknotes are much smoother to touch than real ones.
4) Put a bill under a source of UV light. If the bill is real, it should glow blue for the 5, orange for the 10, green for the 20, yellow for the 50, and red for the 100 dollar bill.
5) Many businesses use a counterfeit detection pen that makes a golden mark, which turn black on a counterfeit bill
Note that bills issued prior to 1990 have neither watermark nor security thread.
In a business setting, it is sometimes quite cumbersome to manually check every bill. Additionally, it takes a lot of valuable employee time. Therefore, many businesses have started to use automatic money counters, which both count bills and run counterfeit detection. Carnation Enterprises is a manufacturer and distributor of money counters and counterfeit detectors. Carnation's bill counters are employed by a wide range of businesses -from convenience stores and gas stations to wholesalers, credit unions and banks. The use of bill counters not only saves time, but also eliminates financial losses.
